A Travel Vlog Like No Other
The Traveling Kunz YouTube channel is all about exploring the many beautiful places in this world. On this page, you will find more details about the history of the channel, but also more about why Ferdinand produces his videos. In a nutshell, it is all about sharing travel experiences.
How it all Started in 2023
For many years, Ferdinand Kunz has been a passionate backpacker, but it was not until the beginning of 2023 that he started his first travel video project. He followed his wife to a group of islands called Kinmen in Taiwan.
Having visited this unique place a few years before as a tourist, he knew that just a few travel snapshots would not cut. Thus, he started the ‘Kinmen Travel Tales’, his first video project.
The aim was to document the island with its outstanding history. While Ferdinand considers himself a bit of a history geek, he had no experience in producing videos. Determined to spread the word about Kinmen, he bought some basic video equipment, watched a few video editing tutorials, and got his show on the road.
Despite its many flaws, the very first episode of the Kinmen Travel Tales went live on 04.03.2023. The Traveling Kunz Travel Vlog was born.
Growing as a Travel Vlogger in Taiwan
The first steps were difficult, but Ferdinand realized that the channel provided a great way to interact with the locals and document his travels in Taiwan. Ambitious to improve, he continued producing videos about Kinmen. Besides history, he began covering topics such as nature, food, and even football. An absolute highlight was an interview series with Radio International Taiwan (RIT). Ferdinand was invited to discuss Kinmen Island in Taiwan and spoke about what to do in Kinmen.
Soon, our amateur travel vlogger started shooting travel videos outside of Kinmen, as well. The second playlist, ‘Exploring Formosa‘, covers different places and experiences in mainland Taiwan. The Traveling Kunz also made it to Japan, where he faced the challenge of producing videos on the road for the first time.
After the trip, Ferdinand wanted to push his videos to the next level. The Traveling Kunz YouTube channel was never intended to be commercial, but Ferdinand committed to improving the quality of his travel memory videos.
Listening to feedback from the audience, it was time to take action. With a limited budget and a dedication to maintaining authenticity, the Traveling Kunz realized the best path forward was to continue creating more content while also reflecting on each video.
Creating Unique Memories on a Budget
How can the video quality be improved while maintaining authenticity, especially as a hobby video producer? Ferdinand did not want to shoot videos on a particular topic just because a certain keyword was trending. Instead, each video should tell a unique story based on a real travel experience without unnecessary fluff.
This idealism posed many challenges, but Ferdinand viewed them as opportunities to improve. Broken microphones, cheap hardware, or lost data did not discourage him. A significant milestone was the ‘Southeast Asian Sojourn’ at the end of 2023, which included travels to Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia
Compared to the Japan trip, many things looked smoother, and the Traveling Kunz channel has become a long-term commitment for its host. Its reach may be small, but it is ready for more great stories. If you have an idea for a video or feedback, feel free to reach out. (Note from Ferdinand: There is no budget for any sort of advertisement, please do not try and sell me stuff.)
Focus on Telling a Good Story and Never Forget to Improve
In 2024, there have already been plenty of new videos, and the Traveling Kunz is planning a new trip. Many things happened behind the scenes, including the launch of this website. Ferdinand also bought a new PC and is now able to produce videos in 4K. Additionally, he found time to update his branding and continues to improve his editing skills.
Ferdinand also experimented with new formats. For instance, he attended Computex in Taipei and produced a report about the event. Additionally, he began engaging more with people, such as during his visit to Xiao Kinmen, where he met a retired teacher who had become a beekeeper. Ferdinand also had the opportunity to document the role of stamps in Taiwan, a topic he had previously underestimated. His focus continues to be on travel, exploration, and evolving as a content creator.
To wrap things up: Traveling Kunz is about exploring and taking on new challenges. Along the way, Ferdinand is glad to meet awesome characters and always has a good story in mind.
P.S. The Traveling Kunz YouTube channel is 100% self-financed. The host has a full-time job, and you can see his professional background on his LinkedIn profile. The Traveling Kunz YouTube channel is not associated with any of the organizations Ferdinand works/used to work for. Ferdinand decided not to speak too much about life as a foreigner working in Taiwan in his videos, but I was interviewed about the topics by Andrés Carbonell.
