The 10 Best Attractions on Green Island in Taiwan
In this post, I will show you how to get to Green Island, highlight the best attractions, and share some of my personal experiences from my visits. If you are looking for more travel inspiration beyond Lüdao, check out my other blogs, such as 5 Best Places to Explore in Taipei or Best Tourist Attractions in Taiwan.
Over a year ago, I published my travel guide video about Lüdao, also known as Green Island, in Taiwan. So, it is about time to update that with this blog: a Green Island travel guide for your next trip.

How to Get to Green Island in Taiwan
You can reach Green Island either by ferry or plane. I took the ferry from Fugang Harbor in Taitung to Nanliao Harbor on Green Island. Keep in mind that the ferry schedule between Taitung and Green Island can vary depending on weather and tidal conditions. And if you have seen my travel vlog about Lüdao, you will notice that the tides can really affect how smooth (or bumpy!) the ride is.
Alternatively, you can fly to Green Island. The only flights to and from the island depart from Taitung City in southeastern Taiwan. From Taipei, there are daily flights from Songshan Airport to Taitung. There you can transfer to Daily Air, which will take you the rest of the way to Green Island.

For trip planning, the East Coast National Scenic Area Office provides more details, And a map of Green Island with the connections to mainland Taiwan. Yes, I did indeed steel these maps of Green Island from them.
The Best Green Island Attractions (IMHO)
We have taken care of the logistics, so let us discuss the attractions. These are my ten favorite places on Green Island. I have visited them all, though of course, there is plenty more to explore. Feel free to share your feedback or tips in the comments below!
Enjoy the Scenery at Niutoushan: the Bullhorn Mountain of Green Island
Niutou Mountain is located on the northeastern cape of Green Island and is perfect for a short hike. This landmark is surrounded by the sea on three sides, and its summit is covered by wide grasslands. From the top, you can also see Loumen Rock, about 300 meters off the northeast coast. The Rock is one of the island’s most famous sea caves.
Explore the Sea Caves of Lüdao
Speaking of caves, I also discovered another amazing spot, ideal for taking epic photos. It is not exactly a hidden gem (there are plenty of Google reviews). However, on Google Maps it is simply marked as “Sea Cave (彎弓洞).” Despite its simple name, it is worth a visit.

Go Snorkeling, Freediving, or Scuba Diving on Green Island
It is an island, thus, you want to spend time at the beach. I visited Dabaisha Beach and brought my snorkel along. I willl admit, I am too weak for freediving, but you can definitely do that here as well. The area is also great for scuba diving on Green Island. Both underwater and on the beach, I met several friendly scuba divers who shared their experiences.
Watch the Stars and Feel the Beach Vibe at Haishenping
Another great place to enjoy the scenery is Haishenping, a coral reef bay located on the eastern side of the island. Due to the reef formations and water erosion, Haishenping features many oddly shaped rocks. Since the east coast is mostly free of artificial light in the evening, it is also one of the best spots on Green Island for stargazing.

Visit the Sleeping Beauty Rock & Pekingese Dog Rock
At Haishenping, you can also see the famous Sleeping Beauty Rock and Pekingese Dog Rock. These two formations are probably the most well-known tourist attractions on Green Island. And maybe even in all of Taitung County. The rocks are remnants of an volcanic wall. Over time, wind and sea erosion slowly shaped them into their current forms. This created the unique outlines we see today.
Hike Along the Green Island “Little Great Wall”
One of the best ways to appreciate Green Island’s scenery is to walk along the Little Great Wall trail. It is located just above Haishenping. Because of its appearance, this scenic trail is affectionately called the “Little Great Wall.” On Google, I even saw a review from a visitor from China complaining that it is much smaller than the original Great Wall. So just to clarify: Do not expect a replica of the Great Wall of China on a small island. Still, it is a great spot for panoramic ocean views and photos.
Visit the Green Island White Terror Memorial Park
Lüdao (Green Island) also has a dark past. After martial law was declared in Taiwan in May 1949, many political dissidents were imprisoned here at what was then known as Taiwan Lyudao Prison, built in 1951. Today, the Green Island White Terror Memorial Park stands as a reminder of that painful history and commemorates the victims of the White Terror period. It is not exactly a cheerful place to visit, but it is meaningful landmark.

Lüdao (Green Island) Lighthouse
The Green Island Lighthouse is one of the island’s most iconic landmarks. The white tower stands 33 meters tall and has about 150 steps leading to the top. So I have heard at least, since it was closed during my visit. Regardless, it remains a beautiful sight and has been designated a historical building in Taitung County.
Last but Not Least: Check Out the Guanyin Cave
I have mentioned several sea caves along the coast. But you should also visit the Guanyin Cave. Though small, it has a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere. Inside the cave is a shrine dedicated to Guanyin Bodhisattva, one of the most revered figures in Buddhism. Besides the temple, you also notice some strangely shaped rocks, adding to its mysterious charm.
Good to Know About Green Island: Population & Climate
Green Island was formed from volcanic rocks and explosive volcanic fragments. It covers an area of about 15 square kilometers. The island is also home to natural hot springs: One of the few places in the world where you can enjoy saltwater hot springs.
I know I did not mention them earlier in this blog post, so I am doing it now. This is tourist attraction number 10, though honestly: I do no find it as outstanding as the others. That is mainly because of the climate. Green Island has a tropical rainforest climate, with average high temperatures between 20°C and 30°C year-round. Personally, that is a bit too warm for soaking in a hot spring! I would rather suggest going freediving or scuba diving instead.
Also, I recommend renting a scooter to get around. The island is larger than Xiaoliuqiu. Exploring by scooter makes it easy to enjoy the scenery at your own pace. Still, the population is small. About 4,500 people live on Green Island, and the main industries are tourism and fishing.
Some visitors rent bicycles or cars, but keep in mind that the roads are old and quite hilly. Driving a car can be uncomfortable. And cycling can be challenging unless are fit and ready to climb a few steep hills.
